Project X Theatre is embarking on a new play development program and we're on the hunt for collaborators. Are you an emerging artist with an interest in outdoor family theatre? You might be the perfect fit!
New Shoots, our brand new play development program, provides emerging artists with a platform to develop new plays for families and young audiences.
The selected participant will develop a new work over one year, supported by Project X Theatre Artistic Producer Randi Edmundson and with mentorship from dramaturg and playwright Robin Nichol. Over the year, the participant will work with Randi and Robin on the first few drafts and will have the opportunity to workshop the piece with actors. The work will then be presented at a public reading during our Theatre Under the Trees outdoor family theatre festival in 2021. Project X Theatre may invite the playwright to continue to develop the work over a second year, leading to a premiere in the summer of 2022.
Project X Theatre is particularly interested in supporting the development of emerging artists from Kamloops and the surrounding region. We strongly encourage submissions from those who self-identify as members of underrepresented communities, including all gender identities, cultures, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and abilities.
The playwright will receive a stipend of $1500 over the first year to develop the play, funding dependent.
We want to help support your vision, though we do have a few suggestions for applicants.
The ideal applicant is:
- an emerging artist (within 5 years of their training program, under 30 years of age, or transitioning to a new area of theatre)
- interested in theatre for young audiences, outdoor theatre, and family theatre
- interested in adaptation, giving existing stories a new lens
Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume to Randi at randi@projectxtheatre.ca by May 11th, 2020. Selected applicants will be invited to a video meeting with Randi to discuss ideas, address questions, and make connections.
